What Is a Stretch Ceiling?

A stretch ceiling is a PVC film or a textile fabric stretched onto an aluminium track fixed around the perimeter of the room, a few centimetres below the old ceiling. The result is a flat surface, with no skim coating and no plasterboard dust.

A correctly fitted stretch ceiling hides cracks in the slabs, cables and ventilation ducts, and leaves room for LED spotlights or hidden strip lighting. The film is heated with a heat gun to about 60°C, fixed into the harpoon track, and as it cools it stretches itself into a smooth sheet. In a flat in Chișinău, fitting one room takes 2 to 4 hours and doesn't require moving the furniture out of the house. Years later, if the neighbours upstairs flood you, the same fabric holds about 100 litres of water per square metre: we drain it through a spotlight hole and stretch it back into place, without you losing the parquet. We fit matte, glossy, satin and photo-print stretch ceilings, in white or colour, for bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens or living rooms.

Matte, Glossy or LED? Types of Stretch Ceilings

The finish is chosen to suit the room and the light. PVC fabrics all fit into the same track, so the look differs, not the fitting.

Matte

Looks like a plastered and painted ceiling, with no sheen. It doesn't reflect light, so you don't see the chandelier and the furniture in it. Suits a bedroom and a living room.

Glossy

Reflects the light and the furniture, and the room looks taller. A white glossy ceiling is often fitted in bathrooms, kitchens, hallways and rooms with a low ceiling.

Satin

A fine sheen, like mother-of-pearl, without the mirror effect of glossy. The colour shifts shade slightly depending on how the light falls.

Photo Print

UV printing straight onto the fabric: a cloudy sky, a starry sky, floral or geometric motifs. Often chosen for a children's room or for part of the ceiling.

With LED Lighting

The lighting is chosen separately from the fabric and works with any of them. You can have recessed spotlights, hidden LED strip lighting around the edge so the ceiling looks like it's floating, or light lines cut into the fabric. The cables and the spotlight mounts are fitted before the fabric, so we settle them at the measurement.

How We Work in Your Home

A stretch ceiling is fitted in a lived-in home, with the furniture where it stands. That's why how we work matters, not just the fabric.

  • A Composite Cylinder, Not a Metal One

The heat gun runs on gas. We use a composite cylinder: it's lighter, doesn't rust, and you can see through it how much gas is left.

  • Fabric with a Health Certificate

You see the film's brand and the certificate before the fitting starts, not after. The faint smell during heating fades after 2-3 hours of airing.

  • We Drill with the Vacuum Running

The hammer drill is connected to an industrial vacuum, so the dust from the holes for the track doesn't land on the painted walls or the wallpaper.

A cross-section of the stretch ceiling: the track fixed to the wall and the fabric held in the track, 3.5-5 cm below the old ceiling old ceiling PVC fabric harpoon track 3.5-5 cm

With large spotlights or hidden ducting, the ceiling drops by up to 10 cm.

Flooded by the Neighbours Upstairs?

The PVC fabric holds about 100 litres of water per square metre, so the water doesn't reach the furniture or the parquet. Don't puncture the water bulge, and switch off the lighting breaker at the board. Call us: we usually come the same day, drain the water through a light-fitting hole or a corner, dry the fabric and stretch it back into place.

How Does the Fitting Go?

From the phone call to the finished ceiling usually takes 2-4 days, and we work in the house for only a few hours.

You Call and Tell Us About Your Room

You tell us the room's area, which finish you want, and how many light fittings. We give you an approximate price on the phone and set a time for the measurement.

2

The Free Measurement (Chișinău and the Suburbs)

The fitter comes with fabric samples, measures the room with a laser rangefinder, checks the walls, and works out the fixed price on the spot, with every spotlight and corner entered on the quote.

3

The Fabric Is Made to the Room's Measurements

The film is cut to the measurements taken, and the harpoon it's fixed into the track with is welded onto the edge. It usually takes 1-2 working days.

4

The Fitting, 2-4 Hours per Room

We fix the track, heat the fabric, fasten it into the track, then fit the light fitting and the spotlights. When we leave, we clear up all the offcuts after us.

Where We Fit Stretch Ceilings

We work in new buildings and in old ones, where the slabs have cracks and joints. The old ceiling stays as it is: the fabric covers it, no skim coating needed.

Questions About Stretch Ceilings

How much does a stretch ceiling cost per square metre?
Matte, glossy or satin fabric costs 150-240 lei/m², with the wall track and fitting included; the difference comes from the fabric's brand and width. Photo print starts from 300 lei/m², and a two-level ceiling also from 300 lei/m². Spotlights, extra corners and the hidden curtain track are added separately, and you'll see them on the quote at the measurement, before the fitting.
How much does the ceiling come to for a room of 12 or 20 m²?
Multiply the area by the price per square metre. A 12 m² bedroom with matte, glossy or satin fabric comes to approximately 1,800-2,880 lei, a 20 m² living room 3,000-4,800 lei, without spotlights. You find out the fixed sum at the measurement: the fitter measures the room with a laser rangefinder and adds every spotlight, corner or pipe to the quote.
Matte, glossy or with LED lighting: which should I choose?
Matte, if you want it to look like a plastered and painted ceiling: it doesn't reflect and suits a bedroom or living room. Glossy, if the ceiling is low or the room is narrow: it reflects the light and the room looks taller, which is why it's often fitted in bathrooms and hallways. Satin sits in between. LED lighting is chosen separately from the fabric: spotlights, hidden strip lighting around the edge, or light lines, and the cables are run before the fitting.
How much does the ceiling drop after fitting?
The wall track takes up 3.5-5 cm of the room's height, so the difference is almost unnoticeable. If you want large halogen spotlights, or you're hiding the ventilation ducting, the ceiling drops by up to 10 cm, depending on the size of the light fittings. We settle the exact height at the measurement, once you've chosen the lighting.
Is fitting with gas dangerous?
No, if the cylinder is in good condition and the heat gun is supervised. The fabric is heated with a gas gun, and we work with composite cylinders: they're lighter than metal ones, don't rust, and you can see through them how much gas is left. While the fitting is going on, children and pets stay in another room, and at the end we air the room well.
Does PVC fabric smell of plastic?
Only during fitting, while the fabric is heated, is there a faint smell. After airing the room for 2-3 hours, the smell fades. Good film comes with a health certificate: ask to see it at the measurement, especially if the ceiling is for a child's room.
Can you fit the ceiling if I already have the wallpaper up?
Yes, we fit onto wallpaper that's already up too. We drill the holes for the track with a hammer drill connected to an industrial vacuum, so the dust is pulled straight out of the hole and doesn't settle on the walls or the furniture. At the end we gather up the track and fabric offcuts and take them away with us.
What guarantee does a stretch ceiling have?
On the fabric, manufacturers usually give a 10-15 year guarantee, and on the fitting the guarantee comes from the firm doing the work. The exact term should be written into the contract, along with the film's brand. If it isn't there, ask for it to be added before the fitting starts.
